Before I married my husband over 30 years ago, our ancestral roots were not really part of our traditions as a family. To my recollection, I do not remember anyone saying, "This is an old Scotish tradition..." I remember hearing that we were from Scotish royalty, but nothing more about traditions.
Upon marrying my husband and being around his family and the neighborhood he grew up in, I was steeped in German, Prussian, Irish, Polish & Scotish tradition. It fascinated me to the point that I felt it was important to do a little research on my own ancestry. Mind you, I haven't had a DNA test run or anything like that, but I just asked my Dad. Come to find out, he had traced our ancestors back to the 1500's or more, if memory serves me correctly. He also told me that our family heritage is Scotish, Irish, and German. Upon finding out this piece of information I went to my husband's Grandmother and told her. I remember her saying, "Oh, you've got a wee bit of a temper in your heritage!" Which I found a bit funny at the time, so we laughed about it. She's been gone 18 years now and I miss her stories. I use to go to her TV room and sit with her and listen to her tell me all about whatever was on her mind and the stories she'd forgotten she'd told me ten times before, but I didn't mind. I firmly believe that the older folks forget who they tell stories to so they can repeat those stories again and again so we don't forget.
Our grandparents and great-grandparents are so very important to us! They love us so much! They've prayed for us, spent countless hours on their knees praying for each of us at this very moment in time. Their prayers may sound different than ours because they see things from a different perspective now, being older. For me, I began seeing things from an eternal perspective years ago and my prayers changed to align with that perspective. I suspect our own grandparents made that shift at some point in time as well.
To experience the birth of a new grandbaby is to see that eternal connection, the blessings of The Father raining down, and touching you, your children, and your children's children. Our youngest son was the first of our three to get married. That union brought the joy of what a dear friend calls, "A ready made Grandy." What a precious blessing he's been! Now they're expecting their first baby together. While my daughter-in-love has experienced this before, my son hasn't, so to hear her tell of my son's reactions to seeing his new baby on the ultrasound for the first time is just a wonderful sweet blessing to my heart.
A new baby is a connection to eternity, a new life that the Lord is blessing our lives with to remind us of His love and answer to prayers spoken long ago by our own grandparents and ancestors before them.
My prayer for you, as you read this, is that the Lord's greatest blessings will be upon you and your family. I pray for health, peace, love, and hope to be upon you all your days. I also pray for financial blessings to be yours. I pray for each of you to know the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as well as each of your family members whom you love. To add a little bit of my own heritage, I pray this blessing upon each of you reading this now, two days from now, two years from now, and after I am with my Father.
AN IRISH BLESSING
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
May God be with you and bless you:
May you see your children’s children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.
May you see your children’s children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home,
And may the land of a friend always be near.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home,
And may the land of a friend always be near.
May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.
"...I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you."(Jer 31:3)
"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." (Num 6:24-26)
The Lord is gracious. I pray that each of you begin this year with great expectation of the Lord to move in your life mightily for His eternal glory.
The Lord is gracious. I pray that each of you begin this year with great expectation of the Lord to move in your life mightily for His eternal glory.
Amen!
Love & God Bless,
Regina Graham
PS: I wrote this post before the events of the 29th which sent me to the ER. I tripped over a baby gate meant to keep the dogs out of the kitchen. Unfortunately, I dislocated my left shoulder, earning me a luxurious night stay in the Tifton hospital after the ER folks couldn't get it back in place after 2 tries. I now have a sling holding my arm and shoulder in place for 2 weeks. By the grace of God, I'll start physical therapy and be well on my way to strengthening my arm again by mid-January. Please pray that my arm stays in place!
